Appointment/Walk-In Policy
Visits requiring an Appointment | Concerns appropriate for Walk-ins | Seniors | Emergencies | A few things to consider
Appointments are strongly recommended for the best possible advising assistance. However, there are some concerns that are time sensitive or require a very brief conversation with an advisor, or you may have a personal or family emergency that affects your academics. To assist with these types of concerns, Advising provides some regularly scheduled walk-in hours. Please read below for information about the use of walk-in hours and then check our advising hours for walk-in availability with an advisor that works with your major.
Visits requiring an Appointment:
- Early registration planning and lifting advisor approval flags
- Semester and long-term planning
- Updating worksheets
- Discussing or declaring a major (make your appointment with an advisor for that major)
Concerns appropriate for Walk-ins:
- Withdrawing
- Dropping or adding a course
- Pass/D/Fail declarations
- Exam excuses
- Online course approval forms
- Transfer equivalency course approval forms
- Personal or family issues that directly affect your ability to attend classes or to complete course work
- First week of classes
- Last day to drop or declare a course Pass/D+/D/Fail
SENIORS
Advisors are available on a walk-in basis for any graduation-related concerns. Please refer to the Advising website for posted walk-in hours. If you wish to see an advisor in your division please schedule an appointment. Many advisors see seniors for worksheet updates, drop-add, changes of majors and minors, and other matters. We invite you to see an advisor in your division/major before your last semester begins to make sure you meet all graduation requirements. Applications for graduation are available online. See "Forms" link.
Emergencies
Personal or family issues that directly affect your ability to attend classes or to complete course work may be dealt with during walk-in hours if no timely appointments are available. Please check with a staff member if you need immediate assistance. You may schedule an appointment or come in during walk-in hours, but you may also contact advising any time to see an advisor and/or a dean if you have an emergency.
***It is your responsibility to ensure that all deadlines are met. Please note that missed deadlines and approaching deadlines are not considered an emergency. If you have missed a deadline, please schedule an appointment or utilize walk-in hours if appropriate.
A few things to consider:
- Be sure to read and understand our appointment and walk-in policies. Note that, during peak pre-registration appointment weeks, walk-in hours may be reduced or suspended.
- Select an appropriate advisor based on your particular needs, interests or concerns.
- Become familar with our website and explore our links to other campus departments that will be useful while here at UNC (including the Course Search Engine, Registrar's Office and Undergraduate Bulletin).
- For semester and long term planning, update and bring your academic worksheet and make sure you are familiar with courses needed for your major.
