Academic Options for Staying on Track
Understanding Academic Eligibility
Your academic eligibility, or academic standing, is a designation given to each student at the end of the semester based on meeting (or not meeting) four different criteria set by the university. Your academic eligibility determines whether you can enroll in classes.
Appeals
There are four different types of appeals. You may review each option below.
Remember you can always visit us during virtual drop-in hours or schedule an appointment with your advisor to talk through the appeals process that applies to you.
Course Drop & Retroactive Term Withdrawal Appeals
If something outside of your control occurred that impacted your academic performance, you can submit an appeal to drop course(s) after the current semester deadline or after the semester has ended. Please note you will need to provide supporting documentation with your appeal submission.
Probation Appeals
The probation appeal is for students who have been placed on academic Suspension and would like to continue taking classes at UNC.
Grade Appeals
Was there an error inputting your grade, or do you feel there was a reason beyond your academic performance that impacted your grade in a class? See if a grade appeal could be an option for you!
Additional Semester Appeals
Do you need some extra time past your 8 allotted semesters to finish up your degree? Click this option to determine if you are eligible for an additional semester!

Credit Overload Requests
Need to take more than 18 hours (fall/spring) or more than 9 hours (summer)? You’ll need to submit a “credit overload request” form.
Final Exam Excuse
If you have two exams at the same time, three exams in a 24-hour period, or a personal emergency or circumstance, you can submit an exam excuse prior to the final exam period at the end of the semester.
Withdrawing from and Returning to UNC
If you need to withdraw from all of your classes, please review this information about the options for how to withdraw. This section will also review how to return to Carolina after withdrawal.
